Tom grinned and held on as they turned into the third straight. Now the leading group was closer. Mira’s strange bronze-coloured dragon was slowing; Mira was geeing it on but it was getting tired and Ironskin passed them easily. Ahead, Connor and Erin were racing neck and neck towards the final turn. Erin’s huge dragon pounded the ground with every stride, but Connor’s dragon – the thin, whip-like creature – was surprisingly fast. They charged at the corner, neither giving way – and collided!

“Argh!” shouted Connor, crashing to one side.

“Argh!” roared Erin, leaping and rolling clear. They started accusing each other, but Tom paid them no mind, as Ironskin slipped past them – and into the final straight!

He risked a glance behind and saw Kai and his dragon Boneshadow, with its white body and bright-red flared chest, still chasing. Ironskin was slowing now, her tongue lolling between her lips.

“Come on, Ironskin!” he roared. She sped up, but now Tom heard Boneshadow’s paws thudding into the ground behind them, and Kai laughing. He started laughing too. Ironskin’s back was hot, and the lines on her back were just like the fires of the forge. Tom gazed at them, and for a moment he remembered helping Dad at home, working the bellows … and then his little room, and sitting at the table with Mum and Dad…

Ironskin lurched.

“Whoa!” shouted Tom.

For a moment, the dragon had almost seemed to fade. She stumbled and veered across the racetrack, her legs moving too fast to keep up with themselves. Kai and Boneshadow raced past them towards the line. Ironskin tried to recover but then lurched again, tripped and crashed down. Desperately, Tom held on to the harness until the last moment, then hurtled clear. He slammed into the ground and shook his head.
